Thank you for visiting our site.  This is a little blog entry I just wrote for  a great website called ShareYourWish.com.  I was asked to explain what we do here at Birthday Fairies.

I’m sitting on my knees by the door of an elementary school classroom. I'm talking to the birthday boy.  He is thanking me for his birthday party. He has a big smile on his face. I make a note in my mind that this is why I do this -- for this smile. I ask the kid how his mom is.  He tells me she’s good and then he leans in and asks me for what must have been the 100th time when Magic Adam (a magician who came and performed for the kids) was coming back. I think back to my 8th birthday. I can still picture the princess dresses and the pink frosting because my mom is the kind of mom that loved to throw big birthday parties and we were the kind of of family that could afford to do it. But many families are not that lucky.

Imagine being an eight year old kid who has never known the feeling of making a wish and blowing out the candles. Who’s never heard friends and family singing Happy Birthday. Who’s never even allowed herself to think there’s a chance a birthday wish could possibly come true.  Imagine never knowing that feeling that on this one day, this one special day, you can act however you want and get away with it. Because this day is your birthday

Birthday Fairies does one thing: We throw birthday parties.  Our mission is to throw as many birthdays for as many kids as possible.  Every child should know what it’s like to be celebrated, to have their family and friends tell them how much they love them and how great they are.  Every child should know that in this crazy life you get one time a year to have the upper hand.  Cupcakes, a birthday present and a few party games might not seem like a big deal and it’s true, we don’t cure hunger or homelessness. Birthday Fairies put smiles on children’s faces-we let them know that they are special-that they are cherished.  These small acts of kindness give a child hope.  A cupcake can't change someone's life but people who care can. Please help us spread some hope.

Welcome to Birthday Fairies!

Hi,

My name is Anna. I'm twelve years old and from New York City.  I had an idea.  I wanted to create a charity that throws birthday parties for children in need.
There are so many kids who live in New York City and around the country who never get to celebrate their birthday, never get to know what it's like to have a room full of people sing to them, close their eyes, blow out candles and make a wish or unwrap a gift.  I want to change that, and with your help I know we can.

At the top of the page there's a link to my blog where I describe the different parties we've thrown.  If you like what we're doing and want to start a Birthday Fairies Club at your school please email me (my contact information is at the bottom of this page) and I'll help you get started. If you don't want to commit to a club but want to throw just one party that's great too!!  And if you don't have time to throw a party but want to help please donate something.  We have a "wish list" that lets you know what we could use.

I'm not going to tell you that a cupcake can change someone's life but people who care can!  Every kid deserves a birthday!  You can help make it possible. Below is a letter Olivia (she runs Birthday Fairies in Long Island) received from the mom of a birthday child. Olivia and her daughter Sadie dropped off a Spiderman themed party but were't able to stay for the celebration.  This is one of the sad things I learned about shelters.  So many of the moms and kids that live in shelters are running from domestic abuse and have to live in secrecy.  If a shelter is interested in parties but can't allow a group of kids in we drop off a "Birthday in a Box" and the moms in the shelter throw the party which is just as good.  All we want to do is bring a little bit of happiness to someone's day, celebrate them and let them know that they are loved. This letter brought tears to my eyes.

Dear Olivia Marine and the Birthday Fairies,
Thank you so much for the wonderful birthday package for D__! He loves Spiderman and really got a kick out of the themed balloons and party goods. The home-baked Spiderman cupcakes were such a nice addition.

D__ is a very positive and upbeat kid, but sometimes living in the shelter can be hard. D___was excited to have a real birthday party just like any other kid, and to spend a wonderful day with his mom, brothers, and friends. We can’t thank you enough for making this happen, and for bringing a smile back to his face.

Sincerely,

D___, his mom K___, and the staff at Rosa Parks INN

Thank you for taking the time to read this.  I hope you want to join us!

Fondly,

Anna Koppelman
